From the Ashes, Questions: Is LA Ready?

The catastrophic fires that ringed LA for the past several days are mostly contained. Now, from the ashes, come questions. Had it been your home, would you have been prepared?  Is LA ready?

In the wake of the devastating fires burning across California, including in San Diego, Malibu and Santa Clarita, Councilmember Alarcón has introduced a motion requesting that the Los Angeles Fire Department and City Planning Department report back to the Los Angeles City Council in 30 days or less on the fires, including what lessons Los Angeles can draw from the disaster, prevention and intervention strategies for wildfires and what safeguards Los Angeles had in place that may have prevented the fires from blazing within the City of Los Angeles. “Disasters of this scope must be used as learning experiences for all cities, not just those hit with the fires, and it is incumbent upon the city to study and compile information that will protect the people of Los Angeles,” said Councilmember Alarcón. “The City Council needs to know if these fires brought to light issues of public safety, including fire response mechanisms and resident evacuation, or with planning and development, so we can use this information to enlighten our future decisions and we can take steps to increase the safety of Angelenos
